Mental Health Myths We Need to Dismantle
The original article was posted in February 2017, updated May 2025.
It's an unusual day today in Michigan. I mean...for the month of February it is. Typically, the grass is covered in snow. Usually, we're helping our neighbors shovel the knee high level of white flakes so we can have a place to park on the street.
However, today the weather is bright and sunny. Temperature is in the 60's. Observing all of the people walking around outdoors, roller blading, and walking their dogs. And to think, it was just yesterday many of them were snowed in, deep in a depression, too anxious to leave the house for fear of sliding across the road.
That’s the power of weather. It can shift how we feel and act.
Let’s Talk About Depression (Without the Shame)
This time of year, depression spikes. For some, it’s Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). For others, it may be Bipolar Depression, Persistent Depressive Disorder, or Major Depression.
(I’ll be covering symptoms in a future blog post. Stay tuned or join my newsletter here to get updates.)
But let’s talk about the elephant in the room...
“Therapists Are for Crazy People” — I Hear It Every Week
I get it. Therapy can feel taboo. Some think it means something is "wrong" with you. Others, thankfully, are beginning to see therapy as the self-care it truly is.
Here’s what I want you to repeat:
Meeting with a therapist does not mean I am crazy.
Being diagnosed with depression or anxiety does not mean I am crazy.
Let that sink in.
Your Brain Deserves Care Too
Just like the kidneys or hormones can become imbalanced, so can brain chemistry. That’s why medication exists—to help restore balance. And just like we don’t call someone with kidney disease “crazy,” we shouldn't label someone with anxiety or depression that way either.
Therapists are here to help—just like any healthcare provider. We support you in navigating thoughts, restoring balance, and feeling like yourself again. That’s why I chose this work.
There is truly a stigma within society regarding mental health. I don't believe it's fair. That is one reason I chose to become a mental health/ behavioral health therapist. There are doctors for the body to help to continue a stable balance. Well, there should be "doctors" to help manage thoughts, feelings of safety, and strive for feelings of normalcy. And there are. This is where I come in.
If you're feeling overwhelmed or exhausted, you're not alone. I created a free Burnout Recovery Starter Kit to help you take your first steps toward feeling like yourself again.
How Therapy Can Support Your Mental Health
Let’s talk about how therapy helps with mental health challenges. Therapy isn’t just for “fixing” what’s broken; it’s a way to navigate difficult emotions, build coping skills, and create a healthier mindset.
Let’s start with one simple thing: meeting with a therapist doesn't mean you’re crazy. Whether it’s depression, anxiety, or just feeling overwhelmed by life, therapy is a powerful tool for improving mental wellness. It’s about balance, perspective, and learning how to manage life’s tough moments.
And just like therapy, self-care plays a big role in mental wellness too.
