What is Giving Tuesday

According to GivingTuesday.org, Giving Tuesday is “a global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world. “

 

This national day of giving occurs annually on the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving.  In Grand Rapids, Michigan alone, there are many nonprofit organizations and small business that depend on donations and gifts to continuously provide the services they offer to the community.  And this, is something you can take part in to help strengthen your community too.

 

Ways To Give

There are many ways to give. Donations come in many forms,  here’s how:

  • Paying it forward

  • Donating or gifting money

  • Providing nourishment

  • Advocating and giving voice

  • Volunteering your time or your talents to help others.

5 Organizations You Can Give To

  1. SeedMoney

    SeedMoney is a nonprofit that helps food, farm and garden projects by offering grants and free assistance with online fundraising and garden planning year. SeedMoney offers challenge grants to diverse food garden projects through a 30-day crowdfunding challenge running from Nov 15 to Dec 15. Learn more about SeedMoney here.

  2. Black Girl Venture Foundation

    Black Girl Ventures is dedicated to creating access to capital for Black and Brown women entrepreneurs. Their initiatives include crowdfunded pitch competitions, 1:1 funding assessments, consultations and introductions to help entrepreneurs gain access to social and financial capital.

  3. Why Not Prosper

    Why Not Prosper is a nonprofit organization founded by Michelle Anne Simmon, a formerly incarcerated woman. She became inspired to turn her life around and help other women in prison as they make the transition back into society.

  4. Female Founder Collective Inc

    The Female Founder Collective is a network of businesses led by women, supporting women. Their mission is to enable and empower female-owned and led businesses. If you wish to donate, visit this link.

  5. GirlTrek

    GirlTrek is the largest health nonprofit for Black women serving over 1 million members. It is considered a movement empowering Black women to walk to reverse the impacts of chronic diseases. To connect to this movement visit their website here.

In Summary

Giving Tuesday is a global event which happens on every first Tuesday after Thanksgiving. There are many organizations in need of the communities contribution to help sustain their services and continue to help build our community. Each of us can also help to build our community by offering our talents, time and other resources.   There are an abundance of nonprofit organizations and small businesses that could benefit from our support, such as Why Not Prosper, Black Girl Venture Foundation, SeedMoney, Female Founder Collective Inc and GirlTrek.
