Period Poverty: What Is It? How You Can Take Action Today.

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
Understanding Period Poverty: Why It Matters for Women’s Health and Emotional Wellness
In 2022, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared May 23–29 as Period Poverty Awareness Week—a crucial step toward shining light on a topic many still find uncomfortable but is vital to women’s health and dignity.
What Is Period Poverty?
Period poverty means lacking access to basic menstrual hygiene products like pads, tampons, and clean underwear. It’s not just about discomfort—it’s about health risks, missed work or school, and stigma that can deeply affect a person’s wellbeing.
Imagine having to choose between buying groceries or menstrual supplies. For many people, that’s a harsh reality. Period poverty doesn’t discriminate; it impacts people across income levels, but especially those facing financial insecurity.
The Mental Health Connection
Living with period poverty doesn’t just impact the physical body—it also takes a significant toll on mental health. The stress, embarrassment, and social stigma can lead to feelings of shame, anxiety, and isolation. For many women and menstruators, managing basic needs becomes an overwhelming emotional burden, adding to existing mental health challenges like depression or burnout.
Addressing period poverty is therefore a critical part of holistic wellness. When basic needs go unmet, emotional resilience weakens—especially for women juggling entrepreneurship, caregiving, and leadership roles.
Why Should Entrepreneurs and Wellness Seekers Care?
As women leaders, entrepreneurs, caregivers, or professionals, you likely understand the importance of self-care and health—and yet, so many in our communities lack the essentials to manage their bodies with dignity.
Recognizing period poverty is part of a bigger conversation about health equity and holistic wellness. When we acknowledge and support these basic needs, we’re helping create a world where women can thrive physically, emotionally, and professionally.
